ACCELERATED READING PROGRAM
Everything You Need to Know for Accelerated Reader Testing
1. ALL KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS MUST PARTICIPATE IN THIS PROGRAM. This is not optional. We use the information we get from the testing as part of your child’s comprehension assessment.
2. Your child does not need to read the book by him/herself. This is not testing your child’s reading ability, just their ability to listen to and understand the events of a story. Think of this as an advanced nightly reading time.
3. Your child cannot take a test on the little phonics readers (the small black and white soft cover booklets, such as Hot, Hot, Hot!). They need to take a test on the library book they take out from our library or a book from home that is found online on the website: www.arbookfind.com.
4. Here is a simple list of your responsibilities as a parent to help your child be successful:
A. Read the book your child has chosen at least 4 times before your child’s scheduled testing day of Monday or Tuesday.
B. Ask them many questions about the events of the story.
C. The day before their test, see if they can retell the story to you. This will tell you if they are comprehending what happened in the story.
D. Send in the book itself with your child on the day they are to take their test. If they are absent on their testing day, then they will take their test the day they return.
5. PLEASE be sure that the book you pick has a test. If you are using a book from home or the public library, visit this website to see if there is a test. http://www.arbookfind.com/UserType.aspx
6. Your child earns points (usually ½ point) based on their score. A 100% score earns 0.5 points, 1 wrong (80%) earns 0.4 points, 2 wrong (60%) earns 0.3 points, 3 wrong (40%) earns no points. ALL students have a goal of 12 points to be reached by the beginning of April. They will pick a free book at our spring book fair. Your child can go above and beyond by trying for 25 points AND 85% comprehension by the beginning of May to earn a putt-putt golfing trip with Mrs. .Luecke
7. These tests cannot be taken at home. They can only be administered at school.
8. Students MUST bring in their book in order to take a test. There are many tests that have the same title. We want to be sure your child is taking the correct test.
